The CPSC decided, however, that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing number of instances in which infants are trapped between the bedside rail and an adult bed.

Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule an alternative provision for multi-use bedside beds to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement of bassinets by using a removable attachment that can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is considering these and other comments received in response to its NPR regarding bedside sleepers. The Commission will consider these comments when it votes on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
